Il Naviglio Martesana, chiamato anche Naviglio Piccolo,

E' un canale artificiale, lungo circa 38 chilometri,

tra il metro e i tre.
Insieme al Naviglio Grande, è stato protagonista per
più di quattrocento anni dello sviluppo economico, agricolo,
commerciale e turistico della città.
Il Naviglio Piccolo veniva utilizzato per svariati scopi:
la navigazione fluviale, irrigazione dei campi coltivati e
la produzione di forza motrice ai mulini.
Venne ideato da Filippo Maria Visconti e costruito
da Francesco Sforza nel 1457. Ai lavori parteciparano numerosi
scavatori e carpentieri, i quali edificarono il letto del canale e
i suoi argini.
Attualmente si sta cercando un modo per rivalutare
il Naviglio della Martesana, sia nella memoria storica,
sia per quel che riguarda il suo ambiente naturale, sopratutto grazie anche
all'esistenza de "Il progetto parco della Martesana", che ha come tema
di fondo la restituzione del fascino e della poesia all'uomo metropolitano
